Get to Know Us
FRENS, the powerhouse jazz-funk collective that lit up Richmond’s music scene from the 1980s through the 2000s.
Known for their signature brand of “fuzz”—a thrilling fusion of funk, jazz, soul, and groove—FRENS was a staple of the region’s cultural life for decades. Their intricate and soulful arrangements, virtuosic musicianship, and magnetic stage presence earned them a devoted following and regular appearances at every major Richmond-area jazz festival. Their legendary weekly residency at Grant’s Jazz Bar in the 1990s became a rite of passage for local music lovers and a magnet for top-tier talent.
Throughout its history, FRENS has featured a long list of outstanding musicians, including Nate Smith, Carter Beauford (of Dave Matthews Band), Tyrone Corbett, and many others. Stars like Chaka Khan, Wyclef Jean, Pieces of a Dream, Mike Phillips, Desirée Roots and Rene Marie often sat in when the band played Virginia or passed through town.
More than a band, FRENS has been a family—mentoring younger players, inspiring audiences, and keeping the spirit of fearless, joyful music alive.
